The History & Legacy of the Kings

Thailand has a centuries-old history of monarchy, spanning dozens of kings. These seven kings (from the 13th to the 20th century) are known as "The Great" or key leaders who made a decisive turning point in the nation's destiny. The park chose them to establish a memorial corridor that runs through the historical and cultural context of Siam.

01

Sukhothai Period

King Ram Khamhaeng the Great (reigned 1279-1298) is honored for his creation of the Thai alphabet and establishing Buddhism as the state religion.

02

Ayutthaya Period

King Naresuan the Great (1590-1605) and King Narai the Great (1656-1688) are celebrated for defending the kingdom and expanding its diplomatic and commercial relations.

03

Thonburi and Rattanakosin Periods

King Taksin the Great (1767-1782) reunified the kingdom. From the Chakri dynasty, King Rama I (1782-1809), King Mongkut (1851-1868), and King Chulalongkorn (1868-1910) are honored for their roles in modernizing Thailand and preserving its independence.

Legends of the Seven Great Kings

Sukhothai Dynasty (reigned 1279–1298)

King Ram Khamhaeng the Great

Historical Contribution: Created the Thai alphabet and established Theravada Buddhism as the state religion.

[Ringing the Bell of Justice]

Legend has it that King Ram Khamhaeng hung a large bell in front of the palace gates. Any commoner who suffered an injustice could go and ring the bell, and the King would personally come out to pass judgment. He created a "father-and-son" relationship between the monarch and the people, and is revered as the founder of Thailand's cultural and legal system.

Ayutthaya Dynasty (reigned 1590–1605)

King Naresuan the Great

Historical Contribution: Declared Ayutthaya's independence from Burmese rule and established the national territory.

[The Duel on Elephant Back]

During the Battle of Suphan Buri in 1593, King Naresuan, riding his war elephant, challenged the Burmese Crown Prince to a single combat while surrounded by enemy forces. This earth-shattering elephant duel (Yutthagahthi) ultimately ended in Naresuan's victory. This day (January 18) is now designated as Thailand's "Royal Thai Armed Forces Day".

Ayutthaya Dynasty (reigned 1656–1688)

King Narai the Great

Historical Contribution: The peak of diplomacy and cultural openness, initiating the collision of Eastern and Western civilizations.

[Siam on the World Stage]

King Narai is one of the most diplomatically visionary monarchs in Siamese history. He sent envoys to the Palace of Versailles in France to meet Louis XIV, and welcomed European merchants, missionaries, and astronomers to the Ayutthaya court. During his reign, Ayutthaya became one of the most prosperous international metropolises in the world.

Thonburi Dynasty (reigned 1767–1782)

King Taksin the Great

Historical Contribution: Reorganized the country and rebuilt the nation in the desperate situation after the fall of Ayutthaya.

[Burning the Boats and the Five Hundred Warriors]

After Ayutthaya was burned down in 1767, Taksin, who was of Chinese descent, broke out of the siege. Leading a force of only a few hundred men, he quickly swept away the separatist forces, expelled foreign enemies, and established the Thonburi Dynasty. He is the most legendary god of war-level monarch in Thai history.

Chakri Dynasty (reigned 1782–1809)

King Rama I

Historical Contribution: Established the Chakri (Bangkok) Dynasty and built Bangkok and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

[The Founder of Bangkok]

King Rama I moved the capital to Bangkok on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River, presided over the construction of the magnificent Grand Palace, and enshrined the national treasure, the "Emerald Buddha", in the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. He not only restored Siam's rules and regulations but also personally compiled the famous "Three Seals Law".

Chakri Dynasty (reigned 1851–1868)

King Mongkut (Rama IV)

Historical Contribution: The father of Siamese science, he took the lead in initiating Western-oriented modernization reforms.

[The Eclipse Prediction and the Light of Science]

King Mongkut was well-versed in astronomy, Latin, and Western science. In 1868, he accurately calculated the time and place of a total solar eclipse through astronomy, and invited Western scientists and diplomats to travel to Prachuap Khiri Khan to observe the phenomenon together, breaking ancient superstitions with science.

Chakri Dynasty (reigned 1868–1910)

King Chulalongkorn (Rama V)

Historical Contribution: Abolished slavery, implemented comprehensive modernization, and preserved national independence amidst surrounding colonial powers.

[Diplomacy and Reform of Wisdom]

At the critical moment when British and French colonists were encroaching on Southeast Asia at the end of the 19th century, King Rama V made Siam the only country in Southeast Asia to maintain its independence through the construction of railways, the establishment of a modern government, the abolition of slavery, and masterful shuttle diplomacy in Europe.

The Meaning of Rajabhakti

The name 'Rajabhakti' was graciously bestowed by King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), signifying the profound loyalty and devotion of the people to the monarchy.
